Overview
The course is intended for Engineers with suitable qualifications and/or Professional experience who wish to study further or expand their range of expertise in specific field of Civil Engineering. The options offered are tailored to the requirements of the Civil Engineering Industry. The course contents will enable participants to specialize in any of the five following options. Not all these options will be available in any one year.
(i) Environmental Health Engineering
(ii) Geotechnical Engineering
(iii) Structural Engineering
(iv) Transportation Engineering
Structure
- Course Structure And Duration

- The programme shall normally consist of a two-year study by coursework, laboratory, examination and thesis.

- Coursework, laboratory and examination - 12 months
- Project work and thesis presentation - 12 - 15months

- In the first year of study the candidate will be required to undertake six approved full courses or the equivalent. Four of these or the equivalent will be compulsory.

- A full course means 60 hours consisting of lectures, tutorials and laboratory work, and a half course means 30 hours consisting of lectures, tutorials and laboratory. In general a full course will comprise of 40 hours of lectures and a half course 20 hours of lectures. The remaining number of hours in each course will be devoted to tutorials and/or laboratory work.

- The second year will be devoted to an individual research project which must be written up as a thesis and submitted for examination in accordance with University Regulations.

Admission Requirements
Entry Requirements
The following shall be eligible for admission into the programme:
- A holder of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering of the University of
Nairobi with at least Second class honours (upper division) or Second class honours
(lower division) with two years working experience or Pass with six years working experience
- A holder of a Bachelor of Science Degree of the University of Nairobi in a discipline closely related to the selected MSc option who has in addition relevant practical experience to be assessed by a departmental panel.
- A holder of similar qualifications from the other institutions recognized by the Senate as equivalent to a Bachelor of Science degree of the University of Nairobi
Careers
Civil engineers can specialize in any of the diverse aspects of their profession,such as project management, construction, environmental analysis, design and planning. They work together with other professions concerned with the environment, town planning, architecture and community development. Some civil engineers work on construction sites, while others are office-based. Certain projects require years of involvement while others are completed within weeks. hence civil engineering career is full of variety.
