April 10, 2024 – The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nairobi played host to a high-profile public lecture by Dr. Najat Mokhtar, Deputy Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Head of the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications. The event, held at the Faculty’s Boardroom, delved into the critical role of nuclear technology in driving sustainable development, drawing academics, researchers, and industry leaders.
In a day filled with exchange and collaboration, Dr. Mokhtar was joined by IAEA’s Ms. Farai Muchadeyi and directors from Kenya’s Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA), Dr. Winfred Ndubai and Eng. Eric Ohaga. Together, they engaged with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Francis Mulaa – Research Innovation and Entreprise, delving into the transformative role of academic institutions in expanding Kenya’s capacity in nuclear science and technology.
The heart of their discussions revolved around a vision for robust technical partnerships between IAEA, NuPEA, and Kenyan universities. This collaboration is poised to bolster Kenya’s nuclear power program, an initiative critical to the country’s clean energy transition and economic growth.
The delegation’s visit also extended into the labs of the Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology, where Prof. Elijah Mwangi guided them through facilities equipped with cutting-edge technology. These labs, powered by state-of-the-art equipment donated by the IAEA, represent Kenya’s commitment to fostering nuclear education, innovation, and research.
As the day culminated, Dr. Mokhtar captivated her audience with a public lecture that transcended mere technicalities. She painted a vivid picture of how nuclear technology—spanning fields such as health, agriculture, energy, and environmental protection—is a lynchpin in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Her message resonated deeply: in a world grappling with complex challenges, nuclear science emerges as a beacon of promise and possibility.
With her visit, Dr. Mokhtar not only highlighted the global significance of nuclear applications but also underscored Africa’s pivotal role in driving sustainable progress. The synergy between local innovation and international collaboration, as seen on this day, offered a glimpse into a future fueled by knowledge, technology, and shared aspirations.
