Abstract

This project report is about a design modification of a mechanical footstep power
generator. The footstep power generation system is classified as a renewable energy
source meaning that it has a lot of benefits. The design uses waste energy from human
locomotion and converts it to useful energy which can be utilized for lighting. The design
uses a method inspired from existing researches with a few modifications to help me
establish the various parameters that I deemed as pertinent to footstep power generation.
The model that I have fabricated has a piston which is connected to a plate where the
weight of the person walking/running on the system is exerted. As the piston moves
downwards it transfers the motion to a link. This motion finally drives a flywheel which
stores and dissipates energy. The piston slides up and down along two metallic shafts
connected on its sides. There are springs fitted on the shafts which enable the piston to
move back upwards once the weight on the plate is released.
