World Engineering Day is celebrated annually on March 4th. This year; the #WorldEngineeringDay2023 was held at the University of Nairobi Towers. This is the University's fourth year hosting the event.  The Faculty of Engineering, in collaboration with our partners the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) and The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK), conducted a series of activities under the theme “Engineering innovation for a more resilient world.”  The event also saw the launch of the African Journal of Engineering Research and Innovation (AJERI), this journal will feature peer-reviewed articles from across the globe.

 The Dean, the Faculty of Engineering; Prof. Ayub Gitau gave welcoming remarks stating; “we value our partners and you are all welcome to the premier institution of higher learning, as Faculty we value the industrial linkages and collaborations. Our students are well endowed with very innovative ideas, good start-ups, and even prototypes. As an industry, we now need to support graduate engineers and students in artificial Intelligence, Machine learning, large data science, and the Internet of Things”

 The Chief guest, Public Secretary, State Department for Roads; Eng. Joseph Mbugua emphasized the essential role engineers continue to play in all sectors of the Kenyan economy. “I call upon all engineers to engineer the future of Kenya, to come up with innovative solutions to challenges in ICT, affordable housing, water, and food security” Eng. Mbugua also discussed engineer welfare and compensation and gave an assurance that the ministry will improve the employment terms of the engineers. Further, Eng. Mbugua also informed the participants that the government is committed to improving the legislative and regulatory environment by repealing outdated laws and enacting new legislation, as well as enacting the Development Control Act and the Building Code."

 During the celebration, the Chairman, of the Engineering Board of Kenya (EBK) Eng. Erastus Mwongera said; “This year’s theme is especially poignant given the many challenges we face today. On this day, we will highlight the EBK's short- and long-term strategic commitments to the benefit of engineers, engineering service, and national economic development.”

 The Vice president, IEK Eng. Grace Kagondu said “Engineers in Kenya have a sovereign role and responsibility to provide solutions at every stage of engagement towards modeling a more sustainable world. Fellow Engineers this calls for us to be innovative and develop a kind of resilience that centers on people, environment, and infrastructure protection.”

 The event was graced by Eng. Margaret Ogai, CEO- IEK, Prof. Larry Gumbe, Chairman, Editorial Board, Eng. Partick Wambulwa, chairman ACEK, Prof. Gituro Wainana, and staff and students from the University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Machakos University, and Technical University of Kenya among others.
