The University of Nairobi today held its inaugural talent day. While presiding over the opening ceremony, Prof. Stephen Kiama (UoN vC) encouraged students to participate and pledged support for talent by the university. He also said that the event will be featured in the university events calendar.    Also present was the DVC AA Prof. Julius Ogengo who emphasized on the importance of universities nurturing talent. The event had 5 categories namely:-

• Music, singing and poetry
• ICT and Engineering Innovation
• Arts, Design and fashion show
• Modelling (Mr. and Miss Talent Day)

The college was fairly represented especially in the innovations category where we got the winning and second best positions. The winning project by Joseph, a student at the department of electrical and information technology titled ‘Ingenious’ is a student information management system that allows students to access all information under one platform. Abundant Karanja, a student at the department of Urban Planning seeks to solve one of the most common problem in the transport industry; overloading. Karanja has developed a system that keeps track of the number of passengers entering a matatu at any particular point and relays the information to the owner or authorities who can tell when a vehicle has excess passengers. The system also automatically switches off the vehicle in case the sensors are tampered with.

Other notable performance from the college was Merab Okapesi from the department of urban planning who brought the house down with her melodious voice. She featured among the best performers in the music category. The event brought together over 500 performers and spectators from the university and was filled with exhilarating performances and surprise appearances including weight lifting and a fashion design. The organizers concluded that there is need for expansion and in future it may culminate into a culture week.
