Analyzing the Effects of Metering and Tariffs Restructuring on the Power Consumption by Residential Consumers

The entry of disruptive technologies such as wind, solar PV, geothermal, and alternative Biofuels into the energy sector significantly reshaped electricity power generation and distribution. Conventionally, a centralized power generating and distribution system has had a monopoly on pricing and billing on electricity consumed. However, the sector changes are evidenced by the increasing adoption of renewables, primarily solar PV, decentralization of power generation, and deregulation of the entire system, which has seen a forced restructuring of the metering and tariffs. This research aims to investigate the effect of such restructuring on middle-class power consumers, a focus of Nairobi County and Narok County. The data collection was done through a semi structured questionnaire targeting 150 middle-income earners randomly sampled within the two counties. The gathered data were analyzed by drawing patterns and themes through a thematic analysis tool. The study revealed that there were significant changes and dynamics linked to metering and Tariff Systems across the power system by residential consumers in Kenya. The study concluded a significant influence of dynamics in the metering system on power consumption by residential consumers in Kenya. Also, the study concluded the power consumption rates were expected to increase by 312.56 units for a unit change in the metering and tariffs restructuring by electricity power suppliers and distributors.
