The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nairobi, in collaboration with the Arab Fund for Technical Assistance to African Countries (AFTAAC), organized a five-day training program for young Scientists and Engineers. The training focused on both conventional and non-conventional welding processes, including arc welding, laser welding, laser hybrid welding, and underwater welding. The training was conducted by Prof. Abdel-Monem El-Batahgy from the Central Metallurgical Research Institute in Egypt. The training sessions took place from Monday, June 5th to Friday 9th, 2023, at the University of Nairobi Towers.

During the training launch event on 5th June 2023;  Amb. Mohanad Salah Ladjouzi, the Assistant Secretary General of the League of Arab States and Director General of AFTAAC presented a special gift to the University on behalf of Amb. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary-General. Prof. Ayub Gitau, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, received the gift on behalf of Prof. Gitahi Kiama, the Vice Chancellor. The importance of such engagements for the benefit of university students and society as a whole was highlighted during the launch.

Notable attendees at the launch included Eng. Dr. Kenneth D. Njoroge, the chairman of the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering; Mrs. Sherin Imam, Minister Plenipotentiary and Head of Operations of AFTAAC; Dr. Khalid Alkathiri, Head of League of Arab States Mission in Nairobi; and Amira Moheddin from the Arab States Mission.

The training program ended on Friday, June 9th, 2023. A certificate of participation was issued to all participants.
