A study on the impact of minimum energy performance standards for refrigeration appliances on energy consumption and their effectiveness.
This research assesses the impact of the minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) by comparing the consumption of refrigerating appliances within the Kenyan market under MEPS and determining the program effectiveness. The trends from the analysed data showed that consumption per litre significantly reduced with increase in the size of the appliance, increase in star rating and increase in the star rating index. The market-share of existing models stood at 52%, 39% and 9% for the one star, two star and three star models respectively. This trend was similar across a period of five years, a clear indication that no newer/more efficient models were coming into the country. There were no appliances with a star rating higher than three. Approximately 35% of the respondents from the interviews and questionnaires understood what the program was about and could utilize information provided on energy labels in purchasing appliances. The effectiveness of the MEPS and energy labels is, therefore, poor due to poor awareness.
