Overview

Introduction

The proposed syllabus takes into account recent scientific and technical advances in the education and training of engineers. It is relevant and broad-based in line with the requirements of the engineering profession. To improve on its utility, the programme has been and will continue to be re-aligned to be consistent with the changing needs of society. It has been developed from a programme of three options to the current five distinct areas of study: Environmental Engineering, Irrigation and Water Resources Engineering, Power and Machinery Engineering, Process and Food Engineering and Structures Engineering, each one addressing a unique engineering need in the society. The programme is targeted toward those graduates who would like to practice at a higher level in industry, research and education.

Therefore, the objectives of the programme are:

To give additional knowledge and necessary skills to the engineering graduates to enable them practise at a higher level in the industry, research and education.

 

Course Structure and Duration

 

The programme shall run over a minimum of four semesters and a maximum of ten semesters of fifteen weeks each.

The programme shall consist of two parts.

Part I shall be devoted to coursework i.e. continuous assessment, seminar presentations, written assignments and semester examination.

Candidates shall be required to take twelve courses. Six courses shall be from the list of the core courses and the other six from the list of electives for the area of specialization.

Candidates shall take a maximum of six courses and a minimum of three courses per semester.

Part II shall be devoted to undertaking a research project, thesis production and examination.

Admission Requirements

1. The common regulations for Masters Degree in all Faculties and those of the Faculty of Engineering, of the     University of Nairobi, shall apply

2. The following shall be eligible for admission:

2.1 Holders of Bachelor of Science in Engineering with at least upper second-class honors Degree.

2.2 Holders of lower second-class honors Degree in Engineering with either a relevant post-graduate diploma or at least two years of relevant experience.

2.3 Holders of pass Degree in Engineering with either a relevant post-graduate diploma or three years relevant experience.

Course Exemptions

  1. A candidate may be exempted up to a maximum of one-third of the taught courses, provided that these are from institutions recognized by the senate of the University of Nairobi.
  2. Applicants seeking course exemptions shall send a formal application to the Director, Board of Postgraduate Studies through the Dean Faculty of Engineering including justification of request and attach evidence of relevant credentials in support of the request.
  3. The application shall be processed only after payment of the prescribed fees.
  4. Applicants will only be exempted from a course offered at a level that is equivalent to what is offered by the University of Nairobi.
