The department of Electrical and Information Engineering opened in 1964 with 17 students in first year, 20 in second year and only 7 in third year. Since then the department continued to grow with assistance from USAID, UNESCO, NORAD, GERMAN COMMODITY AID, BRITISH COUNCIL and The Government of Kenya among others. The original name of the Department was Electrical and Electronic Engineering. This was later changed to Electrical and Information Engineering, the change was to conform to the worldwide trends to embrace Information Engineering as a vital component of engineering science especially electrical engineering.
The department occupies three floors of the American Wing Building on Harry Thuku Road off University Way .The Chairman, who deals with all administration and academic matters in the department, heads the department of Electrical and Information Engineering .It is well equipped with nine laboratories, two workshops, one lecture theatre and several classrooms. It offers BSc., M.Sc. and PhD degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
