The University of Nairobi (UoN) and the Technical University in Delft (TU Delft), Netherlands, have entered into a groundbreaking collaboration in the field of Biomedical Engineering. This strategic partnership aims to develop and implement a Master of Science program in Biomedical Engineering, designed to enhance the capabilities of both institutions and address the current market gaps for locally manufactured medical devices and equipment.
The agreement was solidified during a recent meeting between teams from TU Delft, led by Prof. Jan Carol Dietil, and the UoN Faculty of Engineering, led by Acting Dean Dr. John Obiero. Chaired by UoN Vice-Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama Gitahi, the meeting underscored the importance of leveraging local expertise to create innovative solutions in Biomedical Engineering. This initiative is expected to reduce the region's dependence on imported medical devices.
A multidisciplinary team, including members from the faculties of Engineering, Health Sciences, and Information Technology, will spearhead the integration of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence into healthcare systems. The collaboration's far-reaching impacts include the local production of biomedical products, establishing the University of Nairobi as a leader in biomedical engineering and healthcare design, training skilled medical engineers to tackle evolving healthcare challenges, and fostering an entrepreneurial spirit among students.
This exciting partnership marks a new era of innovation and advancement in Biomedical Engineering, promising significant benefits not only for the two collaborating institutions but also for the broader healthcare industry and community.
