The University of Nairobi celebrated its annual graduation ceremony on Friday, September 20, 2024, marking a significant milestone with the inauguration of its new Chancellor, Prof. Patrick Verkooijen. This event also saw the official launch of the University of Nairobi Big 5 initiatives, a series of ambitious projects aimed at reinforcing the institution's role as a leader in education, innovation, and sustainable development. Among the graduates was Dr. Eng. Festus K. Ng’eno, the Principal Secretary for the State Department of Environment and Climate Change.

A key highlight of the graduation was the Faculty of Engineering, which awarded degrees to 349 graduates, including 319 Bachelor of Science degrees, 24 Master's degrees, and 6 Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

In his address, Chancellor Verkooijen underscored the significance of the Big 5 initiatives, stating, "Today, we stand at a crossroads where education, innovation, and leadership converge. The University of Nairobi Big 5 initiatives are our answer to the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. We are committed to driving change not just within Kenya but across the African continent."

The Cabinet Secretary of Education, Hon. Julius Migos, commended the graduates and recognized the evolving workforce landscape. He remarked, "As we look toward the future, it is clear that the nature of work is changing. The digital economy presents both opportunities and challenges, and it is essential that we prepare our graduates to excel in this new environment."

Prof. Amukowa Anangwe, Chair of Council, extended his congratulations to the new Chancellor and expressed the council's support for the Big 5 initiatives. He addressed concerns about student accommodations, promising, "Efforts are underway to refurbish the halls of residence, and I commit that the Council will set aside 30% of revenue collected towards the restoration of hostels over the next three years."

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jesang Hutchinson, in her inaugural speech, outlined her three strategic priorities: ensuring the university's long-term sustainability, nurturing talent, and expanding influence in research and innovation. She stated, "The launch of the Big 5 initiatives is a defining moment for our university. These programs will not only enhance the University of Nairobi’s reputation but also contribute significantly to Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the African Union’s Agenda 2063."

The University of Nairobi's Big 5 initiatives include the Nairobi Advanced Health Research Institute, the Kenya Green Jobs Center, the University of Nairobi Innovation Park, the Nairobi School of AI, and the TBC Barack Obama Leadership Institute. These programs aim to attract global partnerships and investments, solidifying the University’s role in Africa’s socio-economic development.
