Faculty of Engineering Dean, Prof. Ayub Gitau formally welcomed the first-year students Wednesday, September 21st, 2022 at the E001 Hall. The freshmen were admitted to the Faculty on Monday 19th September for the academic year 2021/22. 

The Dean was accompanied by heads of Departments; Dr. Thomas Ombuya, Chairman, Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering; Dr. Simpson Osana, Chairman, Department of Civil and Construction Engineering; Dr. Duncan O. Mbuge, Chairman-Department of Environmental & Biosystems Engineering, Dr. George N. Kamucha, Chairman-Department of Electrical & Information Engineering and various sections heads from the Assistant dean of student’s office, ICT, Corporate Affairs and administrative staff from the registrar’s office.

The Dean gave a detailed breakdown of the University and the Faculty explaining to the freshmen the governance structure of the University, the student resources, and the opportunities available to the students as they embark on a 5-year long academic journey. Prof. Gitau delivered a motivational address that covered all aspects of university life saying, “congratulations for making it to the Faculty of Engineering – University of Nairobi. We are the leading University in the country and the region and we are also ranked among the top 1000 best universities across the globe. As a faculty, we offer a wide variety of courses that are very interactive. We have a dedicated team of qualified lecturers who are renowned scholars and engineers. We are ready to journey with you as you pursue your course” 

The Dean urged the first years to join professional bodies and students associations as student engineers; the Faculty has collaborations and professional bodies like the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) and Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK)

The Heads of Departments also gave congratulated the freshmen and assured them of support and mentorship in the course of their studies.

The Assistant Dean of Students Ms. Catherine Gatwiri welcomed the students to the Faculty and highlighted the various services offered by the Dean of students’ office saying, “our office looks after the general welfare of the students from the time they join the university to the time they graduate. Our services cover Financial Aid, Psycho-social, spirituality, and academic.” She concluded by encouraging the students to explore their talents and engage in co-curricular activities.

The Faculty also invited Rahma Abdulbasit a finalist set to graduate in the upcoming graduation on Friday 23rd September 2022. Ms. Rahma spoke about her student experience as she pursued a Degree in Mechanical engineering. She urged the students to set goals and achieve them, to explore all the opportunities available, and join professional bodies to grow their network and connections to the engineering industry. 

The current UNSA president Michael Ngetich also address the students and urged them to take up leadership opportunities available to students as well as get actively involved in the social groups and student associations.

The staff and students welcome the freshmen to the Faculty of Engineering and wish them the very best as they pursue academic excellence.
